The seminar includes the biopsychosocial model of pain and the importance of understanding the patient’s lived experience, expressed through their narrative. Pain severity will then be quantified and explored from three aspects, pain intensity, pain-related interference, and pain-related distress, using the International Classification of Disease (ICD-11) scale. Discussing the validity and reliability of identifying the ’tissue causing symptoms’ is inevitable! Practical solutions for each of the three facets of the pain scale and how best to integrate them into practice will then be explored.

About the speaker

Dr Nick Penney graduated from the BSO in 1980, upgrading his original DO to a BSc (Hons) in 2002 with a Delphi study examining if osteopathic case histories could be considered biopsychosocial in nature.

The study led to being accepted in the faculty of medicine, University of Queensland as a PhD student investigating the biopsychosocial model in low back pain. During this time Nick also served as a steering committee member of The Australian Acute Musculoskeletal Pain Guidelines Group, and an expert panel member on low back pain. Nick also represented the Australian Osteopathic Association (OA) in the drafting of Acute Pain Management: Scientific Evidence, and the RACGP evidence-based guidelines for managing low back pain.

Returning to New Zealand, Nick led a multi-disciplinary pain management program that consistently produced some of the best objective patient outcomes across Australia & New Zealand, including the ICD-11 scale.

Nick has lectured and presented his research worldwide and run accredited CME programs for the RNZCGP.

“The knowledge and tools I have gained from Nick have given me more clarity of thought, understanding, and application to best help my patients”

“I would highly recommend the programme presented by Dr. Penney.’ Belinda Fellowes, Osteopath Auckland
